KOREAN WAR VET APPRECIATION LETTER
The Invasion of Inchon, the Pusan Perimeter and the Chosin Reservoir are only a few of the fields of battle where Americans placed their lives on the line for democracy. Of nearly 390,000 Americans who served there, 36,000 gave their lives. The war was a military conflict between the Republic of South Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, backed by the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea across the border between the countriesthe 38th parallelon 25 JUN 50. An armistice was signed on 23 JUL 53, thus ending the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War; however, a formal peace agreement never has been signed.
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the war, the Republic of Korea 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee has various plans to thank, honor and remember Korean War Veterans and their achievements. One of the projects is to send letters of appreciation from the President of the Republic of Korea to as many living Korean War Veterans as possible to express tribute and profound gratitude for their service and sacrifice that laid the foundations of peace and freedom enjoyed today by the people of Korea. Korean War veterans who want to receive the letter should fill our and submit an application form for an appreciation letter from the Republic of Korea President. To obtain forms and information on how/where to submit: · Complete the PDF form at <http://eng.koreanwar60.go.kr/apply.asp>http://eng.koreanwar60.go.kr/apply.asp · By internet click ‘SUBMIT’ upon completion. · By mail complete and print the Application Form and send to: US Branch ROK 60TH AKW Commemoration Committee, 2450 Massachusetts Avenue N.W., Washington D.C., 20008

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HOUSTON MILITARY PROGRAM - May 28 - September 6
Memorial Day weekend sounds free rein all summer long for military families at MFAH
Attention soldiers: It's culture time. In a partnership with 600 art institutions, the <http://culturemap.com/mapdetail/museum-fine-arts-houston/>Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, an initiative with the National Endowment for the Arts to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010.
So that military families can take advantage of Memorial Day weekend, the MFAH will begin the program earlier, on Friday, May 28. The opportunity also extends to the MFAH's two house museums, Bayou Bend and Rienzi.
"The MFAH joins museums around the country to thank military staff for their service," museum director Peter Marzio said.
Military families can now easily explore significant summer exhibitions, such as a retrospective of "cowboy artist" Russell, opening June 6, and an "exquisite" exhibition of Yasuhiro's photographs of Katsura, an imperial retreat in Japan, unveiling June 20. Summer months at the museum abound with family activities, so this initiative is particularly timely.
National Endowment for the Arts chairman Rocco Landesman said, "America's museums are proud to join the rest of the country in thanking our military personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice. I cannot imagine a better way to do that than welcoming them in to explore and enjoy the extraordinary cultural heritage our museums present.
"The works of art on view this summer will inspire and challenge viewers, and sometimes they will just be a great deal of fun."

“Behind the Battle: Financing the Texas Revolution”
The audience will be treated to a visual journey through the financial instruments used by the Provisional Government of Texas (1835-1836) and how it relates to the dramatic events which enabled Texas to gain her independence from Mexico. This powerful presentation puts the audience at the epicenter of the fund raising efforts for the rebel government and reveals the inner workings of a precarious financial system. The issuance of promissory notes kept the revolutionary government afloat until the dramatic funding of a lifesaving loan from land speculators in New Orleans in April 1836. It offers a surprising revelation about the role which land speculation and money played in the present day location and the founding of the City of Houston. The real story behind a legendary part of American history, The Paper Republic tells the story of a debt crisis eerily similar to the headlines of today.
James P. Bevill is an expert on many different aspects of money. He is the author of The Paper Republic: The Struggle for Money, Credit and Independence in the Republic of Texas (Bright Sky Press, 2009). He has spent his career in the financial services industry since graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 1983. He is a First Vice President – Investments in the River Oaks office of UBS Financial Services in Houston. Bevill has been honored with numerous awards for his work in finance and numismatics, is an honorary member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, and has written several articles on Texas and Confederate money and its role in culture and history. He is a frequent lecturer on financial topics. Jim lives in Houston, Texas with his wife, Jodie.
